"Reclaiming our urban space, enriching the city with creative elements envisioned from our imagination: to deliver a decorative solution and at the same time a freeing gesture to escape isolation."
These few lines sum up the manifesto of our latest project Figure-Out by Karpeta and Texturae, which shaped the new theme for both brands at the latest Design Week event. The exhibit was set at Teatro Continuo, a performative art space designed by Alberto Burri in the heart of Milan. The theatre was constructed in 1973, then dismantled and left to the city in 2015. The theatre is the perfect backdrop to convey the message for the latest collection of wallpapers and rugs - a creative work of international designers with artistic direction by Aro Studio.
Figure-Out invites us to think of creativity as an act of liberation from self-centred attitudes and connect with others through a language of art-generated emotions. In the project, wallpapers and rugs decorate city corners: channeling messages, emotions and memories shared between creative designers and the community, akin to how artists share their own creative works. This vision reminds us of Burri and his purpose in creating Teatro Continuo: to extend the stage to urban spaces, in line with the cultural scene of that period, which was thirsty for socialization.
The backstage is represented by a platform elevated above the ground with six rotating panels dyed in opaque black on one side and white on the other. This outdoor stage located between Arco della Pace and Sforzesco Castle in Sempione Park is designed like a prop that is always ready to be used. This space not only matches its surroundings, but it also embodies the soul of the city itself. It's a place intended to work like a theatrical stage - inviting people to perform in a public space. For this reason, Teatro Continuo was the perfect choice as location for the project. Texturae's wallpapers dress the scene with colours, while Karpeta's rugs decorate the base of the structure, suspended between reality and imagination - where anyone can be a theatrical character. It is felt all around - the magic of Sempione Park and Sforzesco Castle - changing the city into a storytelling experience.
